10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, 4 Versions

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different focuses on how places are constantly changing and cities are becoming more and more similar. Places are emerging that could be anywhere in the world without a real local identity. This process is accelerated by technological progress, fast means of transport and communication, and the Internet.
In this sense, the 4 versions of 10.000 Moving Cities explore, how globalization creates “places without a local identity” – as described in Marc Augé’s essay Non-Lieux (1992) –, and stimulates a reflective attitude leant on a novel “immersive confrontation” with the digital society of our time.
In 10.000 Moving Cities all cities have the identical buildings. But the information on the building facades are always different. They are searched in real time on social networks about the chosen location. Not censored nor chosen by a certain community, rather produced by the public (user-generated content) including exhibition visitors maybe. In this way, each request also enables an active participation in the social movements of our time at a specific, self-chosen location.

Interactive Net-Based Installation

Visitors can select any city or place, using a touch screen interface. About the chosen place, the Internet is searched in real time for latest text, image, video and sound information’s. Four projectors and eight audio speakers project the results into the space. Visitors can walk around the real cubes and experience information about the cities they have chosen themselves in 3D.

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, VR (Virtual Reality)
Virtual Reality Net-Based Installation

Using a HTC Vive data google the user can walk inside a 6x6m space. People standing outside the installation can also see in a projection the user’s perspective. A 2.1 sound system transmit the sound to the exhibit space. Two sensors localize the user’s position and transmit it to the Unreal rendering engine that teleports the user into the cities of it’s own choice.
The interface of Virtual Reality version is controlled solely by moving the head, focusing a target city on a world map. To a chosen city, posts from social networks are searched in real time and visualized on an abstract urban environment.

With the Augmented Reality App one moves between the imaginary buildings via smartphone and tablet and participates in the digital communication streams and social movements of our time by means of inserted Social Media Posts. The buildings can be destroyed and rebuilt by the users. But beware! Everyone sees what the other is doing from different perspectives. The more buildings disappear, the more creatures appear.

Mobile App as Interface for a Net-Based Installation

In the Mobile App on a world map, any city can be selected or searched via Hashtag. Always up-to-date and corresponding social media posts are searched for, processed and transferred into the virtual world. The animations follow the movements of the users: the virtual environment rotates when the device is rotated. The sky appears when the device is moved upwards. By tilting the device downwards, the floor appears. The virtual environment is endless and can be navigated in every direction. At the same time the flight speed can be adjusted. The sounds are also responding to all these movements and their flight speed.
